Microsoft is Blocking 24H2 Update on Windows 11 PCs With Auto HDR Enabled

Windows 11 Auto HDR

Windows 11 version 24H2 has a new compatibility issue with the Auto HDR feature designed to turn standard dynamic range (SDR) PC games into high dynamic range (HDR). Microsoft acknowledged that Auto HDR might break some SDR games on the latest version of Windows 11, and that’s why the 24H2 upgrade is temporarily blocked on PCs where Auto HDR is enabled.

“After installing Windows 11, version 24H2, you might experience issues with games if you have AutoHDR enabled in your device. You might observe that the game colors are incorrect in certain display configurations. You might also observe that some games stop responding,” Microsoft explained on the Windows Health Dashboard.

While Microsoft is working to fix these Auto HDR compatibility issues, Windows 11 users can just turn off the feature to remove the upgrade block. Auto HDR can be turned off by going to System > Display > Graphics in the Settings app.

Auto HDR is a feature that Microsoft first introduced on Xbox Series X|S consoles back in 2020. It uses machine learning to add HDR enhancements to games that are built on DirectX 11 or newer and that previously only leveraged SDR color. If results can be hit or miss, the feature now offers an intensity slider.

In addition to this new Auto HDR compatibility issue, Microsoft is also working to fix an audio issue affecting some devices using the Dirac Audio digital sound improvement technology. The company recently applied a compatibility hold on devices containing Dirac Audio with cridspapo.dll, and it will be working with the manufacturer to offer a new driver that’s compatible with Windows 11 version 24H2 via Windows Update
